Carlos Mendoza Has Been Fired

It had to be done, sadly

Carlos Mendoza was fired as Mets manager this morning. Farm director and former Padres skipper Andy Green will serve as the interim manager.

I’ll never forget Gary Cohen in SNY’s postgame show following the Mets’ series win over the Brewers in the 2024 playoffs. He gushed that then rookie Carlos Mendoza will be the Mets manager for a long time. It was out of character for Gare to heap praise on someone so early in their career.

20 months later, Mendoza is out of a job.

Two things can be, and are, true: the New York Mets’ failings haven’t all been Mendoza’s fault, and Mendoza had to go. Mendy, due to injuries and poor roster construction, was all but forced to start the likes of MJ Melendez on a regular basis. However, the team had been sloppy on the field, especially recently when they committed six errors in one game. Something as basic as a pitcher backing up a throw home failed to happen again and again. There was seemingly no accountability for the many miscues and bad fundies.

The Mets chances of turning this thing all the way around into a playoff berth this season are slim. Had they kept the status quo at manager, they’d have no chance. Making a change bumps them up from a one to two percent chance, in my estimation.

Carlos Mendoza seems like a nice man. He’ll probably find a bench coach position somewhere fast. I’m not worried about him. I do feel a little bad though, especially after the earthquakes hit his native Venezuela.

He finished his career as Mets skipper at 206-199.
