The 1st Annual Newsies Awards!

The most prestigious awards ceremony in existence

It may be the offseason, but The Mets Newsletter is committed to providing new material every single weekday throughout, because really, there’s no time off when it comes being a Mets fan. Get a paid subscription today for you or someone you love today!

Hello hello hello. Wow, what a crowd. Thank you. I’m your host, Roger Cormier, and today we are handing out the most prestigious award in the known universe - The Newsie.

Seriously, this audience is outstanding. Not everyone is happy about it though. When we told the Fire Marshal we’d be inviting every pitcher the Mets employed this past season, he suggested we host this show in an airplane hanger.

Juan Soto’s here, and he laughed at that joke. Our social media team made a gif of him chuckling and sent it to Michael Kay with the caption “Look how sad he is!”

Here’s a warning: there will be some surprises this evening. Unlike the Mets when they were trailing after eight innings.

Carlos Mendoza is here. That’s a surprise right there. I’m only kidding. Carlos is actually sitting on a special chair that has an ongoing temperature of 200 degrees. Mendy said he wants to get used to being into the hot seat.

Some folks were worried that this monologue would fall apart after a third of the way through. I assured them I’m not a starting pitcher on the Mets.

Pete Alonso is here. Big Meat Pete is wearing Francisco Lindor’s eye black, Juan Soto’s high socks, Brandon Nimmo’s lotion, Jeff McNeil’s scowl, Tyrone Taylor’s underwear, Sean Manaea’s aftershave, and Edwin Díaz’s broken shoe. I haven’t seen such disarray since Pete tried to make a throw to a pitcher.

Francisco Alvarez made it. Round of applause for Alvy. He played with eight working fingers the last few weeks of the season to make sure the Mets just barely missed the playoffs. Man, if I had a sprained UCL in my thumb and a broken pinkie I wouldn’t do much of anything for a year. Like Jesse Winker.

Hey come on now, around here we try to keep things fair and balanced. Unlike Edwin Díaz’s legs.

Brandon Nimmo made it. Brandon is a really trustworthy guy. It’s true. All the time I hear him saying he doesn’t trust people as far as he can throw them.

I’m being told I am going too low, like Tyler Rogers’ arm angle.I guess it’s time to present some awards?

The Most Forgettable Met

The nominees: Travis Jankowski, Jonathan Pintaro, Blade Tidwell, Ty Adcock, Colin Poche

The winner: Ty Adcock! Who? The 28-year old appeared in three games for the Mets in 2025. In three innings he gave up one earned run. A 3.00 ERA and the Mets let him go back to the minors. Seems wrong.

The Tom Seaver Cy Young Award

The nominees: Edwin Díaz, Clay Holmes, Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Brooks Raley

The winner: It feels wrong and sad to give it to McLean, considering he showed up late in the season and only made eight starts, so let’s give it to Sugar instead. Díaz led Met pitchers with a 3 bWAR. He finished with a 248 ERA+ (100 is average.) Guy had a really good, All-Star season.

Rookie of the Year

The nominees: Luisangel Acuña, Ronny Mauricio, Nolan McLean, Hayden Senger, Brandon Sproat

The winner: Nolan McLean, obviously. And he can theoretically win this award again next year.

Most Valuable Newbie

The nominees: Griffin Canning, Clay Holmes, Tyler Rogers, Gregory Soto, Juan Soto

The winner: Juan Soto. He started off slow and incredibly unlucky. He ended up with a team-leading 6.2 bWAR. Wasn’t an All-Star though.

I Apologize, I Wasn’t Familiar With Your Game Award

The nominees: Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Griffin Canning, Nolan McLean, Jeff McNeil

The winner: While Jeff McNeil surprised us with his center field play, Brett Baty finally had himself a really good regular season after a splendid spring training. How good? The top four Met batters in bWAR this past year were Soto, Lindor, Alonso, and Brett Baty.

The Rey Ordoñez Gold Glove Award

The nominees: Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Nolan McLean, Tyrone Taylor, Luis Torrens

The winner: Let’s give it to Luis Torrens. Don’t run on that cat!

Game of the Year

The nominees: April 18th vs. Cardinals, August 26th vs. Phillies, August 29th vs. Marlins, September 5th at Reds, September 23rd at Cubs

The winner: Slim pickens! What in the hell is Amazin’ Finishes 2025 going to look like?  Let’s go with the September 5th game in Cincinnati with Edwin Díaz’s shoegate. That was a wild one. And the Mets actually won!

Most Infuriating Game of the Year

The nominees: May 23rd vs Dodgers, June 17th at Atlanta, July 28th at Padres, September 20th vs. Nationals, September 28th at Marlins

The winner: “Winner”. Well, this is definite recency bias, but we gotta go with the last game of the season. The Reds lost, so all the Mets had to do was beat the Marlins one time to head to the postseason. They were shut out instead.

Most Valuable Player

The nominees: Pete Alonso, Edwin Díaz, Francisco Lindor, Nolan McLean, Juan Soto

The winner: Juan Soto. He rebounded from his weird early start to put up Soto-like numbers. He even finished tied for the National League lead in stolen bases, which nobody saw coming.

Thanks everybody for coming out! Drive home safely! If you need a relief driver, we got plenty on standby!

Starling Marte took to Instagram to thank Met fans for their unconditional support.

Mets catching coach Glenn Sherlock is retiring. Sherlock had been with the Mets as the team’s third base coach in 2017 and 2018, their first base coach in 2019, and a bench coach in 2022. Sherlock did a splendid job with Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens this past year when it comes to their catching defense.

Mark Feinsand at MLB.com wrote about Alonso’s potential suitors this offseason. He mentioned the Phillies, Blue Jays, Giants, and Red Sox (if they don’t bring Alex Bregman back) as possibilities.

Chris Devenski, who was called up six different times during the 2025 season, elected free agency.
